Japanese Yen At An All-Time Low

Ever wished of visiting Japan? If so, perhaps now is the time to do so, as the Japanese Yen is at an all-time low against the U.S Dollar, at ¥146.95 to $1 USD as of October 12th, 2022. As for the yearly outlook, the Japanese Yen has lost over 20% of its value to the U.S dollar.
Now, why exactly is the Yen so weak currently? There are many reasons why the Yen has fallen so drastically, but the biggest reason can be pointed towards one thing: Japan’s loose monetary policy. The Bank of Japan’s Governor Haruhiko Kuroda has adamantly refused in raising interest rates in the country, citing that the fight against deflation is not yet over. Despite inflation rising above 2% in Japan, the Bank of Japan believes that this rise is not sustainable, and will slip under their target inflation by 2023. Japan has historically held a non-intervening monetary policy, with the last intervention being in 1998. This may be the tell-tale sign of the Bank of Japan’s course of action, or their lack of rather. The currency may be at an all-time low, but it appears that the Bank of Japan is confident in its current policy and has no plans of intervening.
What does this mean for Japan moving forward? In theory, a weak currency can lead to a boom in the tourism industry as the buying power of travelers increases. Japan can expect a large surge in tourism in the near future, under the assumption that their border restrictions loosen up. Additionally, Japanese companies with global operations benefit will greatly from the weak currency, as international profits will be boosted. Ultimately, with no clear-cut solution and divided opinions on the course of action that should be taken, only time will tell how Japan recovers from this situation.
